A newspaper page design with a large portrait is rendered on a purple background.

Guns Drawn

The opinion page is an exciting challenge for news designers, since it allows more experimentation with type, imagery, and layout.

Meghan Sawitzke’s column is oozing with righteous anger — she pairs personal anecdotes with strong language to criticize the issue of domestic gun violence.

This page design integrates a prominent portrait, a data breakout, and creates a unique visual language across the spread.

Managing space is also a complex problem for newspaper designers. The opinion spread is at the end of the newspaper, so everything has to fit into two pages. Creating visual interest, breaking up large blocks of text, and packing 1,400 words into two pages took some time, but the result is a page that I was proud to help bring to print.
